The Promise of Stem Cells: Separating Hype from Reality

The MIT Enterprise Forum and the MIT Club of Colorado presents a scientific look at embyonic stem cell research and examine its influence on commercial applications in such industries as pharmacology, transgenics, biomedicine and cloning.

The Forum will consist of a live video broadcast from MIT followed by a live panel of local scientists doing cutting edge research in Colorado. A unique opportunity to hear from two active areas of the country in one sitting.


Topics that will be covered include:

  • The basics of stem cells, including the difference between adult stem cells and human embryonic stem cells
  • Where breakthroughs in stem cell research are projected and how they could lead to entrepreneurial business opportunities
  • How stem cell research has contributed to advancements in drug discovery, treating cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis, and neural injuries like spinal and head trauma
  • How cloning and transgenics animal methodologies and platform technologies are leading to breakthroughs in biomedical and agricultural sciences


The Forum will be from 5 to 7pm with doors opening at 4:30pm for networking.

 

The live broadcast from MIT E-Forum/Georgia will include:

  • Dr. Steven Stice, Director of Univ of GA Regenerative Bioscience Center
  • Dr. Michelle LaPlaca, Georgia Tech's Dept of Biomedical Engineering
  • David Dodd, former CEO of Serologicals Corp.

 

The Denver Location will also have a live, local panel including:

  • Dr. Michael Klymkowsky, PhD Cal Tech, Researcher MCD Biology CU-Boulder
  • Dr. John Cambier, Chairman, Dept of Immunology, CU-Health Science Center
